Meaning
A round red paper lantern, the kind hung outside East Asian restaurants, bars and homes during festivals. It stands for festive light, celebration and good fortune.
It shows up around Lunar New Year, Mid-Autumn and other lantern festivals, and for Asian food spots and night markets: “Chinatown is covered in 🏮 for the New Year parade.” In Japan a hanging red lantern often marks a casual bar or izakaya, which explains its link to nightlife.
