Clap. Every. Word.

The clapback format is internet shorthand for “listen closely”: a clapping hands emoji between words slows the reader down and gives every word equal weight. Type a sentence and the generator splits it at the spaces and puts 👏 between the words, never at the start or end. A single word stays as it is, since there is nothing to clap between.

Punctuation stays attached to the word it follows, and extra spaces collapse into one. Line breaks are respected, so each line gets its own claps, which is handy for a multi-line reply.

Seven ways to clap

The default clap is the familiar yellow one. Five more versions use the Unicode skin tone modifiers, from light to dark, so you can pick hands that feel like yours: Drink 👏🏽 more 👏🏽 water. The rainbow version cycles through all five tones in order and starts again, which gives longer sentences a little rhythm.

A skin-toned clap is two characters, the clap plus a tone modifier. Most current systems merge them into one emoji; an older system may show the default clap followed by a colored square instead. If your audience might see that, the plain yellow clap is the safe choice.

When to use it

Claps are made for emphasis in short bursts: a reply that needs to land, a slogan, a reminder in a group chat. Over a long paragraph they become tiring to read and to listen to, since screen readers announce each emoji by name. For a warmer mood, try heart text, or wrap words in finger quotes with air quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no clap after my last word?

Claps go only between words. Add a final 👏 by hand if you want one at the end.

Why does my clap have a colored square next to it?

The device showing it does not support skin tone modifiers, so it displays the two parts separately. Newer systems combine them into one hand.

Does it work with accented or non-English text?

Yes. Words are split at spaces and kept exactly as typed, accents included. Languages written without spaces between words get few or no claps.

Can I use it on several lines?

Yes. Each line is processed on its own, so your line breaks stay where you put them.
