Two small caps styles, and how they differ
Small capitals are capital letter shapes drawn at roughly the height of a lowercase x. Our generator swaps each lowercase letter for its small-cap twin from the Unicode character set, while the capitals you type stay full size. That gives the classic book-title look: “Hello World” becomes Hᴇʟʟᴏ Wᴏʀʟᴅ. If you want every letter at the same height, type everything in lowercase.
Small caps uses the closest match for every letter, including the newer small ꜰ and ꜱ. Small caps (compatible) replaces those two with older look-alikes, ғ and a plain s, that more phones and computers can display. If you see empty boxes in the first style, switch to the second.
Quirks worth knowing
Unicode never added a small capital x, so x stays as it is, and q is stood in for by ǫ, an o with a little tail. Digits and punctuation are not changed. Accents survive: “Tiếng Việt” comes out as Tɪᴇ̂́ɴɢ Vɪᴇ̣̂ᴛ. Only đ has no small-cap form and stays as typed.
Because the result is made of characters rather than a font, it pastes into places that offer no formatting at all, such as Instagram bios, comment boxes and display names in many apps. The flip side is that search tools may not match ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ to the plain word, and screen readers can spell such words out letter by letter. Use small caps for a name or a short heading, and keep links, prices or dates in normal text.
Getting plain text back
Pasted small caps somewhere they do not belong? Run them through the unstyle tool to recover ordinary letters. If you like the shrunken look but want something even smaller, try the superscript styles on the tiny text page.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my capital letters stay big?
That is how traditional small caps work: capitals keep their full height and only lowercase letters shrink. Type the whole phrase in lowercase if you want an even line of small capitals.
Which of the two styles should I pick?
Start with Small caps. If a friend says they see empty boxes, or your own device shows them, switch to Small caps (compatible), which avoids the two newest characters.
Why does the letter x look normal?
There is no small capital x in Unicode, so the generator leaves it unchanged. In most fonts a lowercase x already sits at small-cap height, so it rarely stands out.
Do accented letters work?
Yes. Accents and tone marks stay attached, so “Chữ hoa nhỏ” becomes Cʜᴜ̛̃ ʜᴏᴀ ɴʜᴏ̉. Only đ has no small-cap form and stays as typed.
