How to use mini stacked text

  1. 01TypeType or paste your text into the box.
  2. 02CopyPress Copy on the result you like.
  3. 03PastePaste it anywhere that accepts text.

Three mini styles

Mini-me places a tiny copy of a letter directly above it: “Hello” becomes Hͪeͤlloͦ. Mini stacked goes further and lifts every second letter onto the one before it, so the word gets shorter: “Hello there” turns into Hͤllo thͤrͤ. Mini trail takes a different route and follows each letter with its superscript twin: Hᴴiⁱ.

The first two rely on combining marks, characters that attach to the previous letter instead of taking up their own space. Unicode has combining versions of only thirteen letters: a, c, d, e, h, i, m, o, r, t, u, v and x. Letters outside that set stay plain in Mini-me, and Mini stacked never lifts them.

What to expect when you paste

Every app draws combining marks a little differently. In one the tiny letters sit neatly on top, in another they drift sideways or bump into the line above. Preview your text where you plan to post it before you commit.

Mini stacked hides letters in plain sight: the lifted letters are still in the text, just very small, so the word is harder to read and search tools will not match it. Accented letters are skipped by Mini stacked, which means Vietnamese or French words often come out almost unchanged. Mini-me does work with accents, but a tiny letter plus a tone mark on one character can get crowded. Mini trail, built from ordinary superscript characters, is the most predictable of the three.

If you want small letters in a straight line, the tiny text page has superscript and subscript. For shrunken capitals that stay easy to read, try small caps.

Frequently asked questions

Why do only some letters get a mini twin?

Unicode includes stackable mini versions of just thirteen letters: a, c, d, e, h, i, m, o, r, t, u, v and x. Any other letter has nothing to stack, so it stays as typed.

Where did half my letters go in Mini stacked?

They are still there, perched as tiny marks on the letter before them. Zoom in and you will see them, and anyone who copies the text gets them too.

Why does it look messy in some apps?

Placement of combining marks depends on the font each app uses. If it looks jumbled, try Mini trail, which uses ordinary superscript characters instead of stacked marks.

Can screen readers read stacked text?

Often not well. They may read the base letters and skip or spell out the tiny ones, so keep mini styles for decoration and write important words normally.
