What Fraktur is
Fraktur is the broken, angular blackletter that filled German books and newspapers for centuries. Blackletter still turns up on band logos, tattoo sketches, newspaper mastheads and game titles, wherever something should feel old, heavy or a little menacing. Unicode includes a complete Fraktur alphabet for math notation, and this generator uses those characters, so the look carries over when you paste.
There are three styles here. Fraktur is the lighter version: 𝔊𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠. Bold Fraktur is heavier and easier to make out at small sizes: 𝕲𝖔𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖈. Alternating Fraktur swaps between the two on each letter: 𝕲𝔬𝖙𝔥𝖎𝔠.
Readability tips
Blackletter capitals are hard to tell apart even in print. In the lighter style, I and J look nearly the same, ℑ𝔍, and A and U are easy to confuse. Write names in mixed case rather than all capitals, and read the result once before you post it.
Accents stay on the letters: “Huyền thoại” becomes 𝕳𝖚𝖞𝖊̂̀𝖓 𝖙𝖍𝖔𝖆̣𝖎. The letter “đ” has no Fraktur form and stays as typed. Bold Fraktur pairs your numbers with bold digits, while the lighter set leaves them plain.
Where gothic text fits
Short labels are the sweet spot: a clan tag, a server name, a playlist title or one dramatic word in a caption. Because each letter is a special symbol, screen readers may read it badly and search may not match it with normal spelling, so keep anything people need to find or understand in regular text. If you want emphasis that stays easy to read, use bold text instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is gothic text the same as Fraktur?
Mostly. “Gothic” is a popular name for blackletter styles, and Fraktur is the best known of them. The characters on this page are the Unicode Fraktur letters.
Why do some gothic letters show as boxes?
Fraktur letters sit in the math section of Unicode. Most current phones and computers include them, but an older device or a limited font may draw an empty box instead. Five capitals (C, H, I, R and Z) come from an older symbol block and can look slightly different in style.
Can I use gothic text in a game username?
It depends on the game. Many name fields allow only certain characters, so test it first; chat and profile text are usually less strict.
Can I use it for a tattoo design?
Only to try out an idea. These are screen characters, not artwork, so a tattoo artist will want a real blackletter font or a drawing to work from.
