Blackboard bold, explained

Double-struck letters have one stroke drawn twice, leaving part of each letter hollow. The style comes from math classrooms, where it was the easy way to write bold on a chalkboard, and it is why ℝ stands for the real numbers and ℕ for the natural numbers. Unicode has the full alphabet plus the digits 0 to 9, so the look survives copy and paste in most apps.

This page offers three styles. Double-struck keeps your capitals and lowercase as typed: “Real” becomes ℝ𝕖𝕒𝕝. Double-struck capitals turns everything into uppercase, which is the classic look: 𝕍𝕀𝔹𝔼𝕊. Alternating double-struck styles every other letter and leaves the rest plain: 𝕕o𝕦b𝕝e.

Good uses and honest limits

The outlined shapes are light and airy, so they suit short headers, aesthetic bios and numbers you want to stand out, like 𝟚𝟘𝟚𝟞. They are harder to read in long sentences, especially in lowercase, where the hollow strokes get thin on small screens. All capitals for a word or two is the safest choice.

Accents are kept: “Việt Nam” comes out as 𝕍𝕀𝔼̣̂𝕋 ℕ𝔸𝕄. The letter “đ” has no double-struck form and stays as typed.

Keep the important parts plain

Screen readers may read double-struck letters one at a time or name them as math symbols, and in-app search may not match them with the normal spelling. Use the style for decoration and keep handles, links and contact details in regular text. Need to undo it later? Paste the text into the unstyle tool.

Frequently asked questions

Why do C, H, N, P, Q, R and Z look slightly different?

Those seven capitals were added to Unicode earlier as standalone math symbols, so they sit in a different block from the rest of the alphabet. Some fonts draw the two groups with slightly different weight or size.

Why do I see boxes instead of letters?

Most double-struck characters live in a math block that current devices support, but older phones, smart TVs or limited fonts may lack it. The seven older capitals often still appear, so a word can end up only half visible.

Is double-struck the same as outline text?

People use both names for it. True outline lettering needs a font, while double-struck characters are the closest thing plain text offers, and they paste as text.
