Four wide styles
Fullwidth swaps each letter, digit and space for its wide twin, so “aesthetic” becomes aesthetic. Vaporwave capitals does the same in uppercase: VAPORWAVE. The last two add a twist. Vaporwave (Λ & Ξ) replaces A and E with the Greek capitals lambda and xi (VΛPORWΛVΞ), while Vaporwave (Σ & ◇) uses a sigma for E and a hollow diamond for O (VAP◇RWAVΣ). The Greek letters are there only for their shape.
Where the wide letters come from
Fullwidth characters were made for Chinese, Japanese and Korean typesetting, where Latin letters had to fill the same square space as the characters around them. Vaporwave music and art of the early 2010s picked them up for album covers and track titles, and the airy, stretched look became shorthand for retro computer nostalgia.
These wide letters cannot carry accents, so accented letters lose their marks: “Sài Gòn mưa” comes out as Sai Gon mua. The letter đ has no wide version and stays as typed. Spaces turn into wide ideographic spaces, which keeps the rhythm of the line even.
Tips for a clean result
Wide text eats horizontal room fast, so a short phrase works better than a sentence, especially on a phone. Add a sunset or palm tree emoji if you want the full mood. Screen readers handle these characters unevenly, and the Greek variants may be announced as “lambda” or “xi”, so keep them for decoration. To turn fullwidth letters back into normal ones, paste them into the unstyle tool (the Greek letters stay as they are). For wide text with an East Asian twist, see Asian style text.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the spaces so wide?
Normal spaces are replaced by the ideographic space, a blank as wide as one fullwidth letter. It keeps the gaps in proportion with the letters.
Why did my accents disappear?
Fonts cannot reliably draw accents on fullwidth letters, so the generator drops them rather than show broken boxes. If accents matter, pick a letter style such as small caps instead.
Why does my text wrap in the middle of a word?
Many apps treat fullwidth letters like East Asian characters, which may break between any two characters. Keep phrases short or add your own line breaks.
What do Λ and Ξ mean?
They are the Greek capital letters lambda and xi, picked because they resemble A and E. Your text does not become Greek; it just borrows the shapes.
