An Instagram bio is a few short lines that have to say who you are, what you post and why someone should follow. The bio editor has no bold button, so two tricks do most of the work: Unicode letter styles for a touch of personality, and special spacing characters that keep your lines where you put them.
Plan the bio before you style it
Write it in plain text first. A simple structure works for most accounts:
- Line 1: what you do, in a few words.
- Line 2: something personal, or what people will find on your feed.
- Line 3: where you are, or when you post.
- Line 4: what to do next, such as sending a message or tapping your link.
Then pick one line, or even one word, to style. A whole bio in fancy letters is hard to read and looks busy on a small screen. Simple symbols such as ✦ or ➤ at the start of each line make tidy bullets and leave the words themselves plain.
Keep your name and username plain
Your profile has two name-like fields. The username, your @handle, only accepts plain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, so styled letters can’t go there anyway. The Name field is more flexible, but it’s also one of the things Instagram search looks at when someone types your name. If your name reads ℒ𝒾𝓃𝒽 𝒞𝒽𝒾, a friend searching for Linh Chi may never find you. Put your real name in plain letters and save the styling for the bio itself.
Styles that suit a bio
- Small caps (ᴘʜᴏᴛᴏɢʀᴀᴘʜᴇʀ) look neat and stay readable. The small caps page also has a version that swaps a few rare letters for more common ones.
- Cursive script (𝒸ℴ𝒻𝒻ℯℯ & 𝒻𝒾𝓁𝓂) feels personal but gets hard to read in long lines.
- Bold serif (𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨) works for a single label, like a shop name or a job title.
Why blank lines disappear
Plenty of people type a neat bio with an empty line between sections, save it, and find the gap gone. Instagram can trim empty lines and spaces at the start of a line. The fix is to fill each empty line with a character that looks blank but isn’t a space. Our line break tool does exactly that: it puts a blank Braille character on each empty line so the gap stays, and it can add indents or ¶ and § dividers if you prefer something visible.
Put it together, step by step
- Write your bio in plain text and decide which word or line to style.
- Type that word into our generator, copy the style you like, and paste it back into your draft.
- Paste the whole draft into the line break tool and copy the result.
- Open Instagram, go to edit your profile, and paste it into the bio field.
- Save, then open your profile on your phone to check the spacing and make sure every character shows.
Keep contact details plain. Screen readers can stumble over styled letters, and an email address written in a fancy style won’t work if someone copies it.
