One style, many borrowed shapes

This page offers a single style, Vai lookalike. It replaces each letter with a Vai character of similar shape where one exists: “Good day” becomes ꗱꖴꖴꕼ ꕼꕔꕚ. About a third of the alphabet (j, l, m, q, r, w, x and z) has no close match and stays Latin, which gives the result its mixed, handmade feel: ꖾꗋllꖴ.

About the Vai script

Vai is a syllabary created in the 1830s for the Vai language of Liberia and Sierra Leone, and it is among the best-known writing systems invented in West Africa. Each character stands for a syllable: ꗋ, used here for E, is the syllable “to”, and ꖾ, standing in for H, is “hon”. So the output cannot be read as Vai. To someone who knows the script it is a row of unrelated syllables, and they may find the borrowing odd.

Use it playfully and sparingly, as a flourish in a name or heading, and never present it as genuine Vai text or as a translation.

Before you paste

Support for Vai characters varies more than for most styles on this site, so check the result on the device or app where it will appear; some show empty boxes instead. Accents are dropped because fonts cannot place them on these characters, and đ stays as typed. Screen readers may read each character by its Vai name, so keep important words in plain text. The unstyle tool converts the look-alikes back to Latin letters. For another script borrowed for its shapes, see Bamum look-alike text.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Vai script?

A syllabary for the Vai language, spoken mainly in Liberia and Sierra Leone. It was created in the 1830s and is still used by Vai speakers.

Why do some letters stay normal?

Letters such as l, m, r and w have no Vai character that resembles them, so the generator leaves them as typed.

Why do I see empty boxes?

Your device or app lacks a font with Vai characters. Check on another device, or pick a different style for that spot.

Can a Vai reader understand it?

No. The characters are real Vai syllables, but they are picked for their shape, so together they spell nothing in Vai.
