A face made of two accents

Each little face is two ordinary accent marks stacked on a letter. The smiley uses a breve, the curved mark over ă in Vietnamese and Romanian, with a diaeresis, the two dots of ü, stacked above it: dots for eyes, curve for a smile. The frown swaps the breve for an inverted breve, so the mouth turns down.

Because these are combining marks rather than emoji, the faces are tiny and take the color of your text. They sit on letters, digits and punctuation alike, while spaces stay clear: Ğ̈ŏ̈ŏ̈d̆̈ v̆̈ĭ̈b̆̈ĕ̈s̆̈ ŏ̈n̆̈l̆̈y̆̈.

Smile or frown, pick the mood

Smiley above suits greetings, birthday wishes and anything cheerful. Frown above works for mock complaints, Monday posts and dramatic sighs: M̑̈ȏ̈n̑̈d̑̈ȃ̈y̑̈ ȃ̈g̑̈ȃ̈ȋ̈n̑̈. Both keep accents, so “Tiếng Việt” still carries its tone marks under the face, although the stack gets tall.

Small fonts can blur the dots and the curve into a single smudge, and some apps place the marks off-center or let them touch the next letter. That wobble comes with any combining-mark style, so look at your text where it will be posted before you commit to it.

Good uses and limits

Faces work best on a word or two: a display name, a reply in a group chat, the first line of a caption. On long sentences they turn into visual noise, and screen readers may read out every mark or skip them entirely, so never put key information in this style. For bolder decoration, lightning text uses the same trick with a zigzag, and diamond text frames each letter instead.

Frequently asked questions

Why are the faces so small?

They are accent marks sized to fit over a letter, not emoji. Their size follows the text size of the app showing them.

Why do I see dots and a line instead of a face?

At small sizes or in some fonts the marks merge or shift. Zooming in or viewing the text in a larger font usually brings the face back.

Can I use it on accented text?

Yes. Existing accents stay and the face is stacked on top, so a letter like ế ends up with several layers of marks.

Does it make my text longer?

Yes. Every character gains two marks, so wherever characters are counted the text is about three times as long as it looks.
