How to use lightning text

  1. 01TypeType or paste your text into the box.
  2. 02CopyPress Copy on the result you like.
  3. 03PastePaste it anywhere that accepts text.

How the bolt gets there

No lightning font is involved. Unicode includes a combining zigzag above, a mark designed to sit on top of the character before it, and this tool adds one after every letter, digit and punctuation mark you type. Spaces are skipped, so words keep their gaps: G͛o͛o͛d͛ v͛i͛b͛e͛s͛ o͛n͛l͛y͛.

Double lightning stacks two zigzags on each character, which looks like a storm on some screens and like one thicker jagged line on others. Accents stay in place, so T͛i͛ế͛n͛g͛ V͛i͛ệ͛t͛ keeps every tone mark with the bolt stacked on top.

Expect a slightly different look everywhere

Combining marks are drawn by whatever font the reader’s app uses, so the bolt may be sharp and centered in one place and small, shifted or overlapping the next letter in another. That overlap is part of the style, not a bug, but it means the effect is best judged on the screen where it will be seen. Paste a test into a draft or a private chat first.

Every character carries an extra mark, so the text is about twice as long as it looks, three times for double lightning. That matters wherever characters are counted. Screen readers may skip the marks or announce them one by one, so keep lightning text for a headline, a username or a hype line, not the details people need.

Pair it with other marks

Zigzags look sharpest on short words and capitals. For tiny faces instead of bolts, try smiley text; for a line through each letter, see strikethrough text.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the bolt overlap the next letter?

The mark has no width of its own, so the font decides where to place it. Some fonts center it neatly; others let it drift over its neighbor.

Will the lightning disappear when I paste it?

Usually not, because most apps accept combining marks in plain text. A few apps strip or limit stacked marks, so test once before posting.

Does it work with accented letters?

Yes. Accents stay and the zigzag is added above them, although tall stacks such as ệ plus a bolt can look crowded at small sizes.

Can I remove the lightning later?

Yes. The unstyle tool strips the zigzags and leaves your original letters.
