How the blackout works

Each letter or digit you type is replaced by a full block, the solid rectangle at U+2588. Spaces, punctuation and emoji stay exactly where they were, so the message keeps its outline. A letter with accents counts as one character and becomes one block: “Tiếng Việt” turns into █████ ████.

That outline is the fun part. Readers can see how many words you hid and roughly how long each one is, which makes classified text perfect for teasers, guessing games and the classic redacted-document meme.

Looks like a secret, isn’t a safe

The blocks carry no trace of the original letters, so classified text cannot be turned back into what you typed, by this site or anyone else. That one-way change feels secure, but the shape of the message still leaks information: word lengths, the number of digits, punctuation and line breaks. A four-block PIN is still a four-digit PIN.

Treat it as a visual joke rather than a privacy tool. To protect a password, address or account number, leave it out of the post entirely. Screen readers may also read each block aloud, which gets tiresome fast.

Ideas for using it

Hide the punchline of a joke, tease a product name before launch, post a “declassified” list where only one line is readable, or black out a single word in a caption for drama: convert just that word and paste the blocks between the plain parts. For a softer look where the words stay legible, try strikethrough text.

Frequently asked questions

Can classified text be decoded?

No. Every letter becomes the same block, so the original is gone for good. Keep your own copy if you will need the text again.

Does it hide how long my words are?

No. Each letter becomes one block, so word lengths, spaces and punctuation remain visible.

Can I black out only part of a sentence?

Yes. Convert only the words you want hidden, then paste the blocks into your sentence between the plain words.

Will the unstyle tool reverse it?

No. The unstyle tool undoes many styles, but the blocks hold no information about the letters they replaced.
