Three kinds of squiggle
Upper squiggles & hooks uses letters with a hook on top or a curl at the end, such as ɦ, ɠ, ƈ and ɱ, plus vowels carrying a small hook above: “Hello” becomes Ɦẻľľỏ. Lower squiggles & hooks uses letters with a hook trailing below, like ᶏ, ᶒ and ᶅ, and changes lowercase letters only: Hᶒᶅᶅꝍ. Alternating squiggles switches between the two on every letter: Ɦᶒľᶅỏ.
Most of these characters come from the phonetic alphabets linguists use to write down exact sounds, so they are proper letters rather than drawings. A few, like ꞔ and ꞕ, are rarer characters that not every font includes, so older devices may show them as empty boxes.
A note for Vietnamese text
Fun fact: the hooked vowels in the upper style (ả, ẻ, ỉ, ỏ, ủ, ỷ) are everyday Vietnamese letters, where the little hook is the hỏi tone mark. In English text they read as decoration, but a Vietnamese reader will see a real tone.
With Vietnamese input the effect is stronger: the hook lands on top of the tone you typed, so “Có móc” turns into Ƈỏ́ ɱỏ́ƈ with two marks stacked, which can read as a different word. If you write in Vietnamese, the lower style is the safer pick, because its hooks hang below the letter and leave your tones alone: “Hồng Nhung” becomes Hꝍ̂̀ᶇᶃ Nꞕᶙᶇᶃ.
Keep it light
Squiggles are easy to read in short bursts and tiring in long sentences. As with any styled text, screen readers and search tools may treat them as unfamiliar characters, so use them for a name or a tagline. Looking for other playful letters? Frequently asked questions
Which squiggle style works best with accents?
Lower squiggles & hooks. Its hooks sit below the letter, so accents on top stay clear. The upper style adds a hook above, which crowds Vietnamese tone marks and can change their meaning.
Why are capitals unchanged in the lower style?
Unicode has these hooked-below letters in lowercase only, so capitals are left as typed.
Why do I see empty boxes?
Some squiggle letters are rare characters that not every font includes. A device without such a font shows a box in their place.
Can people search for a name written in squiggles?
Probably not. Search tools usually treat ɦ and h as different letters, so keep a plain version of anything people need to find.
