Six kinds of underline
Underline adds a simple low line under each character: I̲m̲p̲o̲r̲t̲a̲n̲t̲. Double underline stacks two lines: I̳m̳p̳o̳r̳t̳a̳n̳t̳. Underline (solid) uses a mark that spans two characters, so it tends to look like one unbroken line: R͟e͟a͟d͟ t͟h͟i͟s͟. The three decorative styles put a small shape under every letter: Under-arrow (h͎e͎r͎e͎), Under-seagull (w̼a̼v̼e̼) and Under-asterisk (n͙o͙t͙e͙).
Every style attaches a combining mark to the character in front of it. Your letters stay normal, so accents, numbers and punctuation are all kept.
Why there are gaps between words
Spaces don’t get a line, so an underlined phrase shows a short break between words. That is deliberate: it keeps the text wrapping normally on narrow screens. If you want the line to look continuous inside each word, pick the solid style.
Because each mark belongs to a single character, the line follows your text exactly. It starts at the first letter you typed and stops at the last, so you can underline one word in the middle of a sentence without touching the rest, as in “please read b̲e̲f̲o̲r̲e̲ you reply”.
Underline with care
Online, underlined text often looks like a link, so people may tap it expecting to go somewhere. Use it for a heading or a single key word, and avoid it anywhere readers could mistake it for a real link. Screen readers usually ignore the marks or read them out awkwardly, and search may not find underlined words, so leave names and contact details plain. To remove an underline later, run the text through the unstyle tool.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the underline broken between letters?
Each line is drawn under one character at a time by your device’s font, and some fonts leave small gaps. The solid style usually connects better.
Why do the arrow or seagull marks show as boxes?
Those marks are rarer than the plain underline, so some fonts don’t include them and show an empty box or a dotted circle. Stick with the single or double underline if your readers use older devices.
Do underlined letters keep their accents?
Yes. Accents above the letter stay in place. Marks that sit below a letter, such as a cedilla in “ç”, may overlap the line in some fonts.
Is this the same as underline formatting?
No. Formatting is added by an app and is usually lost when you copy. These marks are part of the text, so they paste anywhere plain text is accepted.
