How the flip works

This page has one style, Upside down. Unicode has no command for rotating text, so the generator fakes it in two steps. First it swaps each character for one that looks turned 180 degrees: e becomes ǝ, a becomes ɐ, y becomes ʎ, and an exclamation mark becomes ¡. Then it reverses the order, so the last letter comes first. Turn your screen around and “Have a nice day” appears from ʎɐp ǝɔᴉu ɐ ǝʌɐH.

The flipped shapes are borrowed from many places: phonetic symbols, math signs such as ∀ for A, and even the Lisu alphabet for a turned T (ꓕ). Capitals, digits and common punctuation are all covered. Characters with no convincing flipped twin, such as đ, are kept as typed. If your text has several lines, each line is reversed on its own and the lines keep their order.

Accents on flipped letters

Accented letters are flipped too, but their marks are not. The mark stays above the turned letter, so a Vietnamese phrase like “Chúc ngủ ngon” becomes uoƃu n̉ƃu ɔńɥƆ: the hook and the acute accent now sit on n, which is the flipped u. It is still a fun effect, just not a perfect rotation, and phrases with many accents can look jumbled, so test before you send.

Because the letters are stand-ins, search tools will not find flipped words, and screen readers read out the substitute symbols rather than your message. Treat it as a joke or a puzzle, not as a way to share anything important.

Getting your text back

Keep your original: what you typed stays in the input box while you are on the page. Feeding flipped text back into the generator does not give a clean result, because several flipped shapes do not map back one to one. For other playful effects, try the ransom note mixes or squiggle text.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my text reversed and not just flipped?

Turning a whole line 180 degrees also puts the last letter first. Reversing the order is what makes the text read correctly when the screen is upside down.

Why do the accents look out of place?

Unicode has no upside-down accents, so marks keep their normal position above the flipped letter. The result is readable but not a true rotation.

Can I flip it back to normal?

Use your original text instead. Running flipped text through the generator again gives a near miss, since a few shapes do not map back one to one.

Will it show up in every app?

It works in most apps that accept plain text. A handful of the borrowed symbols are rare, so an older device may show an empty box in their place.
